02 / What it means
Same active ingredients is not the same sunscreen
- The protection ingredients match. The filters and their percentages are what block UV light, and these are printed on the FDA label, so the match is exact.
- The feel does not have to match. Water, oils, silicones and film-formers differ, which changes texture, finish and how it sits under makeup.
- The SPF number is tested per product. Two labels with the same filters can state different SPF values, as Kiehl's (SPF 50+) and La Roche-Posay (SPF 50) do.
- Some groups are one company's own products. Kiehl's, La Roche-Posay and CeraVe are all L'Oréal brands. The EltaMD and Neutrogena groups are each one brand's own line. These are the same maker selling at two prices, not a cheaper look-alike from another company.
- The count is a snapshot. Groups are read from the labels as of Oct 11, 2026. Brands can change a label at any time. Prices are Amazon's on Oct 22, 2026.
03 / Questions
Frequently asked
- Is BYOMA Ultralight Face Fluid a dupe for Supergoop Unseen SPF 50?
- On sunscreen active ingredients, yes: both FDA labels list 3% avobenzone, 7% homosalate, 5% octisalate, 9% octocrylene. The rest of the formula is different, so the feel and finish can differ. At $14.99 vs $38.00 for about the same 1.7 oz, BYOMA costs 60% less per ounce.
- If two sunscreens have the same active ingredients, are they the same sunscreen?
- Not exactly. The active ingredients and their percentages match, but the base (water, oils, silicones, film-formers) is different. That changes how it feels, how it wears under makeup and how well it spreads. Each brand also tests its own SPF; two labels with the same filters can state different SPF numbers.
- Where do these percentages come from?
- From each product's Drug Facts label filed with the FDA and published on DailyMed. Every row links to its label. We matched each Amazon listing to its label by brand, product name and form.
- Do any of these sunscreens go over the EU homosalate limit?
- Several do. The EU caps homosalate at 7.34% in face products; US labels may list up to 15%. Our homosalate check lists every product's percentage.
