Census / Sunscreen rules, US vs EU
Which face sunscreens on Amazon have more homosalate than the EU allows?
16 of 38 best-selling face sunscreens on Amazon list more homosalate than the EU allows in face products (Regulation (EU) 2022/2195, 7.34%). They are legal in the US, where the limit is 15%.
The 38 are the face sunscreens in Amazon's top 50 Facial Sunscreens best sellers on September 30, 2026 that we could match to one FDA drug label (we could not match 11 more, so the floor is at least 16 of 49). Labels read October 1, 2026. 14 of the 38 list no homosalate at all.
The EU has capped homosalate at 7.34% in face products since 2025. US labels may list up to 15%.

04 / The rules
What the EU and US rules say
European Union
7.34%
- Face products only, and not propellant (aerosol) sprays. The rule does not allow it as a UV filter in other products, such as body sunscreen.
- Set by Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/2195 of November 10, 2022, after a review by the EU's scientific committee on consumer safety (SCCS).
- From January 1, 2025, products over the limit may not be placed on the EU market. From July 1, 2025, they may not be sold there.
- Before this, the EU limit was 10% in any cosmetic product. Read the regulation
United States
15%
- FDA's sunscreen rules (OTC Monograph M020) allow homosalate at up to 15%, in face and body products. FDA order, section M020.10(g)
- In 2021 FDA asked makers for more data on 12 sunscreen filters, including homosalate. FDA says asking for more data is not a finding against these filters. FDA Q&A
- FDA's June 2026 sunscreen order still lists homosalate at up to 15%.
05 / How we counted
50 best sellers checked. 38 matched to a label.
We took the top 50 of Amazon's Best Sellers in Facial Sunscreens on September 30, 2026, plus 10 face sunscreens this site already covers. Only the best sellers are counted in the figures on this page; the others are listed separately. We matched each one to its US drug label in FDA's DailyMed by brand, product line and SPF. Every homosalate percent comes from that label.
We left out 13. One is not a face sunscreen (Biocorneum Scar Gel SPF 30). For the other 12, we could not tie the Amazon listing to one US label. Some listings sell several formulas under one page. Some products have no DailyMed label we could find. Being left out says nothing about how much homosalate they have.
12 products we could not match, and why
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Mineral Light Fluid (#7): The listing sells several shades and SPFs. DailyMed has separate tinted mineral labels for them, and we could not tie this listing to one.
- Abib Airy Sunstick (#11): DailyMed has an Abib "Airy Sunstick Smoothing Bar" and a "Quick Sunstick Protection Bar", but no "Airy Sunstick Protection Bar". We could not tell which label this listing is.
- d'alba Waterfull Tone-Up Sunscreen Serum (#13): No DailyMed label found for this product (searched "d'alba", "Waterfull", "Piedmont").
- Supergoop! Glowscreen SPF 40 (#19): DailyMed lists Glowscreen SPF 40 labels both with homosalate (Dawn, Sunset) and without it. We could not tell which formula this listing ships.
- EltaMD UV Skin Recovery SPF 50 (#21): No DailyMed label found for this product (searched "Skin Recovery", "EltaMD").
- EltaMD UV Daily Hydration+ Tinted SPF 50 (#27): DailyMed has an EltaMD "UV Daily Hydration" label, but not a tinted one. We could not tie this listing to it.
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Daily Invisible SPF 50 (#28): One listing sells three formulas (UV Clear, UV Hydra, UV Tone), each with its own label.
- Eucerin Clear Skin SPF 50 (#34): No DailyMed label found for Eucerin Clear Skin (searched "Eucerin", "Clear Skin").
- ISNTREE Hyaluronic Acid Daily Sun Gel (#42): No DailyMed label found for the Daily Sun Gel (ISNTREE's labels are for other sunscreens).
- Paula's Choice Resist Hydrating Fluid SPF 50 (#47): No DailyMed label found for this product (searched "Paula", "Resist", "Hydrating Fluid").
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Pro-Sport (#50): DailyMed has only a spray label for Anthelios UVPro Sport (SPF 45). We could not confirm the listing is that spray.
- DRMTLGY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 45: DailyMed's DRMTLGY tinted moisturizer labels are SPF 46, not SPF 45. We could not confirm they are the same product.

- 14 of the 38 face sunscreens we checked list no homosalate: EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 Face Sheer Tint, EltaMD UV Daily SPF 40, Colorescience Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50, CeraVe Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Stick SPF 50, EltaMD UV AOX Elements Tinted SPF 50, La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Ultra-Light Fluid SPF 50, Eucerin Sensitive Mineral Face SPF 35, Hawaiian Tropic Mineral Powder Brush SPF 30, Roe Wellness SPF 50 Mineral Powder, EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41, ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless Tinted, Supergoop! Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 (tinted). The quick check on any box: if the only active ingredients in the Drug Facts panel are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, there is no homosalate in it as an active ingredient.
- What is the EU limit for homosalate in sunscreen?
- 7.34%, and only in face products that are not propellant (aerosol) sprays. EU Regulation 2022/2195 set this limit. Since January 1, 2025, products over it may not be placed on the EU market. Since July 1, 2025, they may not be sold there at all. The earlier EU limit was 10%.
- Is homosalate allowed in US sunscreen?
- Yes. The US sunscreen rules (FDA's OTC Monograph M020) allow homosalate at up to 15%. In 2021 FDA asked makers for more data on 12 sunscreen filters, homosalate among them. FDA says asking for more data is not a finding against these filters. FDA's June 2026 sunscreen order still lists the 15% limit.
- Does La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk SPF 60 have homosalate?
- Yes, the US version does. Its US drug label lists 10% homosalate, with octocrylene 7%, octisalate 5%, avobenzone 3% (DailyMed label dated February 29, 2024). Check the Drug Facts panel on the box you buy.
- Are US sunscreens with more than 7.34% homosalate breaking a rule?
- No. They are US products sold under US rules, which allow up to 15%. The EU limit applies to products sold in the EU.
