Lume vs Native deodorant
Buy Lume if body odor is your problem. In one blogger's 18-day test, with Lume on one armpit and Native on the other, Lume won more days, and she called it "a stronger, more effective deodorant." Buy Native if scent matters most. That tester liked Native's scents better, and one Native stick costs $13.97. Both regular sticks are now free of aluminum and baking soda, and both claim 72 hours of odor control. Neither brand names the study on its product page.

Quick answers
- Is Lume better than Native?
- For strong odor, probably. In Elisabeth McKnight's 18-day test, with one brand on each armpit, Lume won more days and Native won a few, including one after a workout. She wrote that "when I was sweatier (on my period), Lume was the only thing that worked." For scent, Native won. She used Lume sticks in the old Lavender and Alpine Fresh scents, then the new Clean Tangerine formula, and Native Coconut & Vanilla, likely its older formula with baking soda.
- Does Native have baking soda?
- Not any more. Native's regular stick now uses magnesium oxide, and its label says it is "Free of aluminum, parabens, phthalates, ozokerite, and baking soda." Older reviews, including the two most often cited, say Native uses baking soda. If you liked Native's old formula, the current stick is not the same.
- Which lasts longer?
- Both claim 72 hours, and neither names a study. People who tested both reported less: Elisabeth McKnight got 12 to 24 hours from Lume and 8 to 18 from Native. My Chemical-Free House found Lume and Native Sensitive both struggled to last 12 hours on non-exercise days.
- Which is better for sensitive skin?
- It depends on what bothers you. Native Sensitive ($13.95) has no baking soda and no acid. Lume says it was "tested for Whole Body use on sensitive skin," but its mandelic acid is an AHA: the label says not to use it on broken or irritated skin, to patch test first, and to use sunscreen, because AHAs may make skin more sensitive to the sun.
- Can I use them on private areas?
- Lume says its stick goes on "underarms, intimate areas, underboobs, tummy folds, and more." Native's regular stick is for underarms. Native's Whole Body stick ($11.99) says "pits, privates, and more." Both are for outside skin only.
- Do Lume or Native contain PFAS?
- Neither lists one. Mamavation, a consumer group, bought deodorants in 2023 and 2024 and had a lab test them. "Lume Whole Body Deodorant" showed 32 ppm organic fluorine, a sign of PFAS. Native Coconut & Vanilla and Native Whole Body showed none. Mamavation calls its tests a spot check, and formulas can change.
- Is Mando the same as Lume?
- Nearly. Mando is sold on Amazon by the same company, Lume Deodorant LLC. Its stick's label matches Lume's Soft Powder stick ingredient for ingredient; only the scent ingredients differ. A Mando 2-pack is $25.33.
- Do Lume or Native stop sweat?
- No. Both are deodorants, which fight smell. Antiperspirants reduce sweat, and FDA regulates them as drugs as well as cosmetics. Lume sells a separate Sweat Control line; unlike its deodorant, it contains an aluminum compound (aluminum sesquichlorohydrate).
- Which costs less?
- Per ounce, about the same on Amazon: the Lume 2-pack is $4.89 an ounce and Native's 2.65 oz stick is $5.27. The lowest per ounce in our list is the Native Deodorant, 3.1 oz at $4.83. Lume's own site sells a stick for $12.75 with Subscribe & Save (read Oct 23, 2026).

02 / Tests
What people who tested both found
We did not test them ourselves. These are the two published tests we found that ran Lume and Native against each other.
- Elisabeth McKnight: Lume on one armpit and Native Coconut & Vanilla on the other for about two and a half weeks. Her article says Native uses baking soda, so she likely tested Native's older formula. Lume won days 1 to 4 and most of days 8 to 10; Native won days 6 and 7, and 12 to 14. "there has never been a time where the armpit with the lume deodorant had more body odor." Her estimate: Lume 12 to 24 hours, Native 8 to 18. She liked Native's scents better.
- My Chemical-Free House: Lume Unscented stick against Native Sensitive (no baking soda) and the Native original, which the July 2024 article says had baking soda. "Both Lume and Native (without baking soda) struggled to get me through 12 hours without smelling (on non-exercise days)." Her pick was Native's old formula with baking soda, which is no longer on the label.
- Both brands say their deodorant is "clinically proven" for 72 hours. Neither names or links the study on its product page.

05 / How we checked
What we read, and what we did not do
On October 23, 2026 we read each brand's product pages, each Amazon listing's ingredient and safety text, and FDA's pages on deodorants and alpha hydroxy acids. We check Amazon prices every night. We did not test the deodorants ourselves. The Amazon links on this page may earn us a commission. It does not change the picks.
