Quick answers
- What is the best eyelash growth serum?
- Over the counter, the ForChics Prostaglandin-Free Lash Serum ($26 on Amazon). Its full ingredient list is printed, it lists peptides and biotin, and it has no prostaglandin analog. For real growth, the only proven option is Latisse, a prescription drug: 78% of users' lashes improved by at least one step on the trial's lash scale at 16 weeks, against 18% on a plain solution.
- Do eyelash growth serums work?
- Only one kind is proven: Latisse (bimatoprost), which FDA approved in 2008. Over-the-counter serums are sold as cosmetics, so FDA never checked whether they grow lashes. Most promise "longer-looking" lashes. Expect conditioned lashes from a peptide serum, not new growth.
- Is GrandeLASH or Babe lash serum safe?
- Both best sellers list isopropyl cloprostenate, a prostaglandin analog: a lab-made cousin of the drug in Latisse. They are sold as cosmetics in the US. Canada bans these ingredients in cosmetics, and the EU's safety committee said in February 2026 they "cannot be considered safe" in lash and brow products.
- What are the side effects of lash growth serums?
- For the drug in this family, Latisse's label lists eye itching, eye redness and darkening of the skin around the eyes, and possible "increased brown iris pigmentation which is likely to be permanent." Serums with a prostaglandin analog may carry similar risks; they were never tested by FDA.
- What is a good cheap lash serum?
- The VieBeauti Eyelash Serum at $21.99. It prints a full ingredient list with no prostaglandin analog and has 18,383 ratings on Amazon (4.3 stars).
- Can a serum have a prostaglandin that is not on the label?
- It has happened. In 2013 Sweden's medicines agency found a prostaglandin analog in 3 of 26 lash serums whose labels did not list one. Buying a brand that prints its full ingredient list is the best check you have.

03 / Latisse and the rules
Latisse, and what regulators say about the cosmetic versions
- Latisse (bimatoprost 0.03%) is the only brand-name lash product FDA has approved, in 2008; a generic now exists, also by prescription. Its label says it treats thin lashes "to treat hypotrichosis of the eyelashes by increasing their growth including length, thickness and darkness." In its trial, 78% of users' lashes improved by at least one step on the trial's lash scale at 16 weeks, against 18% on a plain solution. It needs a prescription. The label lists eye itching, eye redness and darkening of the skin around the eyes, possible "increased brown iris pigmentation which is likely to be permanent," and, after approval, reports of "periorbital fat atrophy" (a hollowed look around the eyes). Latisse label
- Canada lists "Prostaglandins, their salts and derivatives and their analogs" as prohibited in cosmetics (Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist), with isopropyl cloprostenate and dehydrolatanoprost among them. Health Canada
- The EU's safety committee (SCCS/1680/25, final opinion February 2, 2026) said of isopropyl cloprostenate, methylamido dihydro noralfaprostal and dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide: "none of them can be considered safe for use in cosmetic products intended for promoting the growth of eyelashes and eyebrows." European Commission
- The UK government (December 5, 2024) reviewed 110 lash serums sold online; 23 declared a prostaglandin ingredient. UK report
- The US: FDA seized Age Intervention Eyelash, which contained bimatoprost, as an unapproved drug (2007), and FDA warned the maker of RapidLash and neuLash that its isopropyl cloprostenate serums were unapproved drugs (2011), from trade press; FDA’s own pages did not load. Today prostaglandin lash serums are sold as cosmetics.
- Hidden ingredients: Sweden’s medicines agency found a prostaglandin analog in 3 of 26 lash serums whose labels did not list one (2013, cited in the UK report).
04 / How we checked
What we read, and what we did not do
On October 19, 2026 we took the best-selling lash and brow serums on Amazon and read each one's ingredient list as printed: the brand's own site first, then the Amazon listing. We looked for every prostaglandin analog named by regulators. We did not test any serum in a lab, so a list that leaves something out would fool us too. We check prices on the serums we link every night. The Amazon links may earn us a commission; it does not change the pick.
