02 / The FDA records

One mask has an FDA record you can check. The other says "FDA Cleared" with no number.

Omnilux: the filing is "faceLITE," K191629, cleared September 12, 2019. FDA's device listing names the Omnilux Contour under that number, along with 20 product names in all. Dr. Dennis Gross: its page says "This device is FDA Cleared!" We searched FDA's 510(k) database and device listings for Dr. Dennis Gross, SpectraLite and FaceWare and found nothing. The closest record is K183247, the dpl Faceware from LED Technologies, Inc. It has the same 3-minute treatment and the same light colors Dr. Dennis Gross lists (605 nm amber, 630 nm red, 880 nm near-infrared, 415 nm blue; the filing adds 660 nm red). Nothing in FDA's records ties it to Dr. Dennis Gross.

03 / What actually differs

Four differences, and which ones matter

  1. 1. Acne mode

Only the Dr. Dennis Gross mask has blue light, the color most studied for acne. The Omnilux is red and near-infrared only, and its FDA clearance covers wrinkles, not acne. If acne is your main reason, this decides it.

  2. 2. How much light you get

The Omnilux runs 10 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week; one tester measured about 26.7 mW/cm². The Dr. Dennis Gross runs 3 minutes a day, and its output has never been published or measured. The two mask trials that compared a real mask with a fake one used about 6 to 10 mW/cm² of each color.

  3. 3. The FDA record

The Omnilux has one you can look up (K191629). The Dr. Dennis Gross does not give one, so you cannot check what it was cleared for. That may only be a missing number, but it is the brand's job to give it.

  4. 4. Where you buy it, and the warranty

Buy the Omnilux from Omnilux: on Amazon a reseller charges $442.99, and Omnilux's 2-year warranty covers only its own or approved sellers. The Dr. Dennis Gross is sold on Amazon by the brand itself, with a 1-year warranty if you register within 30 days.

04 / What owners say

What owners complain about

From owners' own posts on Reddit, read October 7, 2026. This is not a survey: people with a problem post more, and brands post too. Counts are the number of different owners who said it, and are approximate.

About 12 owners said they tried both. 5 kept the Dr. Dennis Gross; one said of the Omnilux, "The LEDs got hot and it felt like my face was suffocating" (Reddit). 4 moved to the Omnilux; one, whose Dr. Dennis Gross mask began to flicker within 30 days, wrote, "I would have never ordered the Dr. Dennis gross mask and just purchased the Omnilux" (Reddit). Omnilux has more owner posts, so compare the kinds of complaints, not the totals. The Dr. Dennis Gross owner count is an estimate from a keyword search of the archive; failure counts are the ones we read by hand.

Frequently asked

Which is better, Dr. Dennis Gross or Omnilux?
For most people, the Omnilux Contour Face. FDA's listing names it under K191629 (wrinkles), one tester measured about 26.7 mW/cm² from it, and it has a 2-year warranty. It costs $395 from Omnilux. The Dr. Dennis Gross DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro is the better pick only if you want an acne mode; it was $455 on Amazon from Dr. Dennis Gross on October 7, 2026.
Is the Dr. Dennis Gross LED mask FDA cleared?
Dr. Dennis Gross says it is, but it does not publish a K number, and no FDA filing or device listing we searched names Dr. Dennis Gross, SpectraLite or FaceWare Pro. The closest FDA record is K183247, the dpl Faceware from LED Technologies, cleared March 14, 2019 for wrinkles and acne, with the same 3-minute treatment. Nothing in FDA's records ties the two.
Is Omnilux FDA approved?
No LED mask is "FDA approved"; they are cleared. The Omnilux Contour is FDA cleared for wrinkles: FDA's device listing names it under K191629, a 2019 clearance filed as "faceLITE." It does not cover acne.
Does the Dr. Dennis Gross mask work for acne?
It has a blue-light mode, which is the light most studied for acne, and the brand says 97% of people in its own study saw an improvement in acne after 2 weeks. That is the brand's study, and we found no FDA record that names the mask, so we cannot tell you what FDA cleared it for.
Is 3 minutes a day enough?
Nobody has published how much light the Dr. Dennis Gross mask puts out, so no one can say. At 3 minutes a day it gives 21 minutes of light a week. The Omnilux gives 30 to 50 minutes a week, at about 26.7 mW/cm² by one tester's meter. Dr. Dennis Gross says using it more than once a day "will not yield intensified or expedited results."
Can you buy Omnilux on Amazon?
Yes, but not from Omnilux. On October 7, 2026 the Amazon listing was sold by Posh Gifts Online for $442.99, $48 more than Omnilux's own price. Omnilux's warranty covers only buyers from Omnilux or its approved sellers.
Do I need goggles with either mask?
Both brands say no. Omnilux says its mask is safe to use without eye protection, and Dr. Dennis Gross says its mask is cleared to be used without goggles. Dr. Dennis Gross says to talk to a doctor first if you have an eye condition or take a medicine that makes your eyes sensitive to light.
