A hot air brush is a brush with a dryer built in. The barrel is the round part that holds the bristles. A bigger barrel covers more hair at once; a smaller one lifts at the root and curls the ends tighter.

02 / Barrel size

Pick the barrel by how long your hair is

Hair lengths are the ones each maker prints on its own listing.

03 / How to use it

Four steps from Consumer Reports and a dermatologist

From Consumer Reports, read October 28, 2026.

Towel-dry first
Consumer Reports says to remove excess water with a towel before you use any dryer.
Use a medium setting
Consumer Reports says to use the dryer on a medium setting. The Revlon Plus has one. The Root Booster and the 2.8-inch Revlon do not, so use Low on those.
Hold it 6 inches away
Consumer Reports says to hold a dryer 6 inches from your hair to cut heat exposure.
Add a heat protectant
Dermatologist Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, MD, told Consumer Reports that "using a heat protectant on your hair can also lessen breakage."
